In “Monsters, Whales, God’s Art, & Other Stuff that Makes You Barfy,” you meet Augustine, the cynical leader of an orphan posse. None of the boys think they're lovable enough to be adopted, especially Auggie. After all, his own parents didn't want him. Why would anyone else? He isn't buying any of that "God loves you" stuff, so don't bother telling him that.
Despite his attitude, he finds himself debating with a smart-alecky, raucous, conniving nun, Sister Mary Magdalene. She understands the boy's doubts and will prove to him that God does exist and will never let him down.
Her plan of attack is simple. She nags and cajoles Auggie relentlessly and piques his abounding curiosity with partial stories about Jesus and all his miracles. Much to Auggie's chagrin, the more he hears, the more he wants to know. But Sister Mary Magdalene isn't giving him all the answers he wants. She simply pushes the Bible under his nose until he reads it.
Will the two stubborn souls meet in the middle?

I finished the book a few days ago and was dismayed when I came to the end. I want to read more of Augustine, Jose, Sammy, and M! Although the book might have been written primarily for young people, I can tell you that this sixty-six year old enjoyed it thoroughly. From the beginning, I was on Augustine's side. I wanted him to learn of God's love, and I could see he was ready for it, even though he couldn't always see it himself. When he began to "get it," and to relate stories from the scriptures, his versions touched me on an emotional level that a more polished version might not.Product details

Linda, you crack me up!
